Children choose a subject by texting a code. Quizzes consist of five questions - and the correct answer plus an explanation is sent back. Progress is stored and used to track children’s progress.

Our focus right now is on building the MPrep platform from an assessment-based system that quizzes students on topics learned in class to a multi-media learning platform accessible to as many students and schools as possible through widely used ICT. With simple mobile technology, we are building an educational ecosystem that gives deprived students access to quality study tools and provides teachers with meaningful data about their students.

More than 4000 students in 84 schools across Kenya are using an SMS-based mobile learning system called Mprep to prepare for exams.
The text messaging assessment tool, aligned to the Kenyan curriculum quizzes students on topics they have learned in class, gives learners feedback and additional information on topics they are weak in.

Toni Maraviglia is tackling this challenge. Her company, MPrep, uses a common technology, cell phones, to improve learning for Kenyan primary school students.
